driving 3d game demo downloadWhat is the best desktop for me? (add links)?

Ok so im looking to buy/upgrade my 9yr old computer... getting really old as my inverter board i believe is dying, besides it only has a 20gb ide hard drive(which i would like to keep) and it has a 126mb ram very sad... for what im trying to do...

so here' my everyday use and what i do with my comp:
-PC Games, i like to try demos download etc... so needs decent graphics card, processor etc..
-use cad programs again with the graphics card and processor..
-rendering like blender and 3D game generators like ogre and what not for a physics simulation game called Rigs of Rods(RoR) which my recent computer is slow on... i currently have a Dell Dimension 4500 great computer but becoming outdated all i need is a tower/desktop no need for screen keyboard mouse etc....

i'd like it to be pretty decent price like between 3-400 would be nice i guess maybe 500 but i would prefer if it was an ide hd(oh and lots of space here i'd like 20gb goes out fast) the 7200rpm hd's look great if they are ide's that would be awesome but if there is someway to pair sata's with ide's then i could do that too...

if you guys have any suggestions hook me up with a link
thanks
just a recap
-games

BTW im a PC man mac i'm not too keen on(no offense to mac users im just used to PC and windows XP)

You don't want much do you?

There are two things that really tax a computer's resources. Gaming and 3d work. Auto-cad comes under 3d work.

If this is your work, you need to get the hottest thing out there to be at your best. I suspect it may not be or you'd already know that.

That aside, you need to decide how fast you want to be. You'll pay accordingly.

If this is all secondary, you might be happy with another Dell desktop with added hard drives. Fortunately for you and all of us computer people, these days we can get incredibly powerful computers for reasonable cost.

What we have on the average laptop used to take up three rooms in a university. Cool, eh?

Good luck. Have fun and whatever you decide, make sure you get your system disks, even if you have to send for them.

You can unlock 2 additional cores on the X2 550, effectively turning it into a X4 955 for no additional cost.

In order to do this you have to flash the BIOS to version F2c, then set the EC setting to Hybrid/Special and the ACC setting to Auto.
i personaly prefere linux. im running ubuntu 9.04 now. thare are a few good games available for free download some good first person shooters available in the repository. but most gamers like windows. because of direct x games like call of duty and doom3 things like that. linux uses open gl wich is like direct x. linux is a better operating system for sure. but it may not be for you. if you go to ubuntu.com you can download ubuntu. it will run as a live cd. just burn the iso to a disk pop it in restart and ure running linux. it never touches ure hard drive good way to see if you like it or not. if you do you can install it if not just eject the disk. and ubuntu is just the one i use. thares a bunch of linux distrobutuions out thare. all have live cd's available
